Globalping Dashboard: Adopt your probes and earn credits

We're excited to announce the launch of the web-based Globalping Dashboard! This new addition to the Globalping platform provides you with a convenient way to manage your probes, increase rate limits, and generate credits to exceed those limits further.

Up until now, you had to oversee your probes manually. Our dashboard makes it easier to keep track and manage probes in one place. You can enjoy increased API rate limits just by signing up. Plus, every probe you adopt in the dashboard generates credits for you, which you can spend to continue running measurements if you surpass the default limits.

Globalping Dashboard overview

Let's start with a quick tour of the dashboard and the basic features it has to offer:

Head over to the dashboard at dash.globalping.io and sign in with your GitHub account.

You can get an overview of your probes and credits in the dashboard's Overview page.

Once you're in, you'll find the following pages, which you can access via the navigation on the left:

  • Overview: get an overview of your probes, their status, and the generated credits
  • Probes: adopt, view, and manage all the probes you host
  • Credits: track how many credits you've earned and also how many you've spent
  • Tokens: generate tokens and use them in your requests when working with the Globalping API to authenticate

With the Globalping Dashboard we hope to provide you with the following:

  • a user-friendly way to adopt and manage your probes
  • a centralized location to see all your probes' status, credits, and tokens
  • a convenient way to increase rate limits and generate credits to exceed those limits

And, of course, the dashboard is going to continue to grow, and we’re planning to release more features over time. Internet performance tracking, scheduled and continuous measurements, detailed data analytics, and much more will be part of our dashboard. Register and stay tuned!

All about probe adoption

By adopting a probe in the Globalping Dashboard, you connect it to your Globalpingaccount. While you've already been the probe's owner before, adopting it makes this official and comes with some perks for you as well! After connecting a probe, you can:

  • correct its location
  • assign custom tags you can target in your measurements
  • start generating credits

To adopt a probe, go to the "Probes" page in the dashboard and click the "Adopt a probe" button. This will open an overlay that guides you through the process, including verifying the probe via a code sent to your probe to finish the adoption process.

Follow the instructions on screen to adopt your probe.
💡
Need more support? We've created a tutorial on our blog, "How to run a Globalping probe on DigitalOcean with Docker", which provides a step-by-step guide on how to adopt probes.

Bringing this feature to our community is quite important to us because we're always looking for people to host one or more probes. We hope that the benefits of probe adoption serve as a great incentive to do so! After all, the more probes we have in different locations, the better our network will be. This will allow Globalping to offer a more stable and reliable platform for everyone.

Probe management features

When you click on one of your adopted probes, a "Probe Details" overlay will pop up that lets you manage the probe. Let's look at the two most important features you can find here:

Custom tags

Under "System tags", which the Globalping API assigns to probes automatically, you'll find a "User tags" section. Here, you can add one or more tags consisting of your GitHub username and a custom string.

You can create one or more custom tags to help organize and target your probes.

Custom tags help organize your probes and target specific ones for your measurements.

For example, if you host probes on platforms like DigitalOcean or Raspberry Pi, you can group them using tags and then target them for your measurements. Of course, you can also share these tags with others so they can target your probes as well.

Location correction

When you run a probe for the Globalping network, the API tries its best to correctly configure the probe's location data.

While the country detection should always be accurate, it's possible that the API detected your probe's city wrongly. With the Globalping Dashboard, you can now manually correct the probe's city.

Change the location of your probe in the Probe Details window.

Naturally, since we expect the country to be correct, you can only update the city to another one in the same country. For example, if your probe is in Utrecht but was mistakenly marked as being in Amsterdam, you can now correct this (but you can't set it to be in London).

By using this new feature, you help make the Globalping network more precise, making sure that all users can enjoy more precise measurement results!

Increasing rate limits and generating credits

Let's wrap things up by talking about increasing API limits and the new credit system.

If you've been using Globalping for a while, you may not have encountered any issues with the rate limits.
That's because we set these limits quite high (100,000 tests per hour) to ensure flexibility during development. However, with the launch of user authentication and the dashboard, we're now ready to shift to the initially intended limit of 250 tests per hour per IP address.

Note: The rate limit change will be rolled out gradually, so you have enough time to adjust. For more details, check our announcement on the rate limit changes here.

Increase rate limits by creating a Globalping Dashboard account

Simply sign into the Globalping Dashboard, and your limit increases to 500 tests per hour, regardless of whether you host probes!

  • CLI tool: Use the globalping auth command to log in with your Globalping account and enable the increased limits for the CLI tool.
  • Slack app: Slack Workspace admins can now connect their Globalping accounts and enable the increased limits for all users in the workspace.
  • API: To enjoy the increased rate limits when using the Globalping API, generate a token in the dashboard's "Tokens" page and include it in your API requests. Learn more in our API documentation.
  • Website: Make sure you are logged into the dashboard when using our web tools on the Globalping website to make sure you have the increased limits.

Exceed rate limits with earned credits

If 500 tests per hour are not enough, you exceed this limit with your earned credits (one credit equals one test).

Note: Keep in mind that running a measurement from five different probes already counts as five tests.

Earning credits

You can generate credits by:

You can always view the available number of credits in your dashboard, along with how many you've spent over time.

View the amount of credits you've earned and spent on the Credits page.

Spending credits

Spending credits is automatic. As soon as you hit the hourly limit, Globalping will start using your credits to run tests until the hourly limit resets. That way, your network testing can continue without disruptions as long as you have enough credits to fuel your tests.

For more details about credits, visit our credits page here.

Create a Globalping Dashboard account

We encourage all Globalping users to sign up to the dashboard and enjoy the increased rate limits right away.
And if you're hosting probes, adopting them in the dashboard means you can start earning credits for additional tests.

We're grateful to everyone who helps improve the platform by hosting probes, and we hope you find the dashboard and all its features a useful addition to your daily work with Globalping.
